Scripture: Psalm 1:1-3

Key Ideas

The psalmist contrasts a godly man with wicked, sinful and mocking people.

A godly person avoids three types of engagement with wickedness: influence (walk), affiliation (stand) and entanglement (sit).

A godly person makes God’s instructions, the Bible, the object of his delight and meditation.

Delight is feeling intense happiness or euphoria prompted by some event or thought.

Meditation focuses one’s attention upon specific principles, concepts or ideas to examine and understand them.

A godly man and a flourishing tree share three similarities: its planter, its placement, and its vitality.

Like a tree cannot plant itself, a person cannot become godly without God’s instructions.

Like a tree thrives by being placed near a flowing stream, a godly person thrives by drawing his or her delight and thought from God’s instructions.

Like timely fruit-bearing and tenacious durability demonstrate a flourishing tree’s vitality, what a person’s life produces and how one endures demonstrates his or her godliness.

A godly person prospers in his or her activities just like a tree can flourish by a stream.

A prospering godly life is as obvious as a flourishing tree.

Where have I placed my life? Near God or near wicked men?

What stirs delight in me? What can I do to change my source of delight and instruction?

How much attention do I give God’s Word?

Is my godliness obviously flourishing?

A person’s source of joy and focus of thoughts turns his life either toward God or away from Him.
