ALBUQUERQUE (BNM) - A recent conference hosted by Ramsey Solutions and the Baptist Convention of New Mexico challenged New Mexico pastors and church leaders to “transform the giving culture” in their churches through biblically-based financial principles.

The Momentum Conference took place April 9 at the Sonoma Campus of First Baptist Church, Las Cruces, and April 11 at the main campus of Sagebrush Church, Albuquerque. 15 people from seven churches attended the Las Cruces event and 33 people from 12 churches attended the Albuquerque event.

According to the event website, Momentum was “a one-day training that combine[d] leadership development with step-by-step instruction on leading a church-wide plan to teach your congregation how to handle money God's way. It will equip you and your leadership to transform the culture of your congregation to one of generosity and true, biblical stewardship.”

The event also aimed to teach leaders “how to lead families in your church to discover financial freedom and how to lead your church to develop a culture of generosity,” according to promotional material.

Douglas Mills, pastor of Mountainside Methodist Church, Cedar Crest, attended the Albuquerque event. In a written statement to the Baptist New Mexican he said, “I am convinced. Most of my people in church haven’t learned how to manage money. My folks are in bondage to debt and they are more faithful to their creditors than to our Christ. The school loans crises and the consumer debt crises are both proof. We need biblical principles for money management, and I believe Financial Peace University is the teaching we need. And Momentum is the way to involve a large part of the congregation in a life-changing discipleship pathway.”

Kyle Bueermann, pastor of First Baptist Church, Alamogordo, told BNM he “thought the Momentum Conference was great. It's really eye opening to consider how many church members in the U.S. don't know how to steward money well. Momentum provides a great opportunity to teach biblical stewardship to the entire congregation.” Bueermann attended the Las Cruces event.

Ramsey Solutions is the official name of Dave Ramsey’s popular financial stewardship ministry.
