PORTALES (BNM) - Following the final session of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico's Annual Meeting at the New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries main campus in Portales on Oct. 23, the home served a barbecue meal to all who attended.

Tables and chairs formed rows under a large tent and a basketball court became a serving area where children's home staff served the meal. Randy Rankin, the home's president, cooked the entire meal. Volunteers served barbecued brisket, sausage, cornbread, pinto beans, potato salad, fruit salad, and cobbler. Children living at the home helped to serve cold drinks and assisted people with finding a place to eat. BCNM missionary staff also helped with the meal and its clean-up.

Arrangments of fall flowers and personal prayer request for children decorated each table under the tent. The prayer requests were written by children on the cards. Children's home staff encouraged everyone to take the prayer requests home and pray as the child asked.

Tours of several buildings on the camps were available after the meal. Guests were invited to visit the new chapel; the Massey Center, a dining, food storage and conference facility; the gym and its displays of the homes 100 years of ministry; Grant Cottage, one of four residential housing facilities on the campus; the home's Transitional Living Triplex; and the home's barn, the hub of the home's award-winning 4-H programs for the children.

At Grant Cottage, fourteen-year-old Faith invited everyone to her guided tour. Walking through the facility, she pointed out the living room with its fireplace, sleeping areas for the children, the house parents’ apartment, the dining room and the kitchen. Right behind Grant Cottage was a playground with swings and recreation equipment.
