VERNON, Texas (BNM) - Ivey Massey, a charter member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, Hobbs, died May 13 at the age of 93. He was born in Vernon, Texas, and spent his childhood in various oil field towns. He graduated from high school in Portales and attended Eastern New Mexico University, Portales. At ENMU, Massey met his wife, RoJean. Massey served in the United States Navy. And, when he returned home, he worked in the oil field.
The couple moved to Hobbs in 1948 and started Ivey Construction Company. After a few years, Massey sold used cars. Then, he owned Lam and Massey Insurance Company, which was later called Massey Insurance. The couple spent 40 years in the insurance business.
In 1958, the Masseys became charter members of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church. Ivey was a 50-year member of Gideon's International, served on the New Mexico Baptist Foundation board for 10 years, and served on the GuideStone Financial Resources board for eight years.
At his church, Massey was one of the first deacons elected to serve and was the church treasurer from its founding until 2010. He was a faithful attendee of his church until the last few months when he moved to a nursing home. Massey and RoJean celebrated their 75th anniversary on May 11, just two days before he died.
Massey's survivors are his wife, RoJean; two daughters, Connie Massey, Hobbs, and Iva Jean Montgomery (Dewayne), Lubbock, Texas; two granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Bettye Albers, Madill, Oklahoma; and nieces and nephews.
