GALLUP (BNM) - Luis Flores Gomez, age 87, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Gallup. Services were Friday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Gallup.
Gomez was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and came to the United States in 1949 when he was 17 years old. He attended Wayland Baptist College, Plainview, Texas. Gomez married his wife, Tina, in 1955.
Gomez pastored eight churches in New Mexico over a span of 38 years. He pastored Primera Baptist Church, Anthony (1963-1965); Calvary Spanish Baptist Church, Las Vegas (1965-1966); Primera Baptist Church, Deming (1967-1969); El Buen Baptist Church, Gallup (1971-1990); El Faro Baptist Church, Deming (1991); Vida Eternal Baptist Church, Ruidoso (1992-1997); Hispanic church planter and ELD director, Los Lunas (1998-1999); and El Buen Baptist Church, Gallup (2000-2001).
Gomez served as the president of the Convencion Bautista Hispana de Nuevo Mexico from 1982-1984 and 1991-1993. He was also active in associational and convention work, having served on the executive board of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico and the board of Western Baptist Association.
Gomez was chosen as missionary of the month in March of 1987, while pastoring El Buen Baptist Church, Gallup. Gomez was the author of four books and was a regular contributor to the Spanish Quarterly published by the former Baptist Sunday School Board.
Gomez was preceded in death by his wife, Tina, and survived by one son, Luis Gomez, Jr., and his wife, Amanda, and four grandchildren.
